It was in 1608 when Captain John Smith was to first explore the shores of the Chesapeake Bay in which he was able to obtain a royal charter from Charles the First for the colony of Maryland to be settled by Lord Baltimore. In 1632, the first boat of settlers made their way to the shores of St. Clement's Island which today is known as Blakistone Island as a means of escaping religious persecution.

surveyed the northern most border of Maryland and
then in 1791, a small portion of Maryland was ceded
as a means of creating the now District of Columbia,
the heart of American Democracy. The British attempted
to capture Baltimore in 1814 through the bombardment
of Fort McHenry which led to the inspiration of
The Star-Spangled Banner. Although during the Civil
War, Maryland was considered to be a slave state,
they fought on the side of the Union and as a result
this led to the residents of Maryland fighting on
both sides of the war putting brothers against brothers.
