In 1609 Henry Hudson first laid eyes on the area
of Delaware and within one year Capt. Samuel Argall
would name the area after the governor of the Virginia
Colony. By 1631 there was an attempted Dutch settlement
which was succeeded by the Swedish colony, Fort
Christina. Fort Christina is where Wilmington now
stands but soon after establishment with the help
of the Netherlands, New Sweden would ultimately
fall under Dutch control.
By 1664 the Delaware Territory would transfer to
the English under the control of William Penn and
by 1704 much of the lower counties were already
semiautonomous. As a result during the American
Revolution, Delaware would fight to become its own
state and after the constitution was written, in
1787, Delaware would be the very first American
State to ratify it.

powder factory and since has been a leader in the
